Establishment of new library services

Details:

This public/school library was rapidly out-growing the existing public services in the area. There was an increase in demand for places at local schools, library access and other services for the community. In particular, the new housing estates created a strong case for a new secondary school in the area.

After considerable pressure from the community the County Council developed their ambitious plans for a new Centre of Learning.

The solution

Information Matters™ were contracted to provide specialist knowledge and services in two areas. Firstly, supporting the initial set up of the library, and then ongoing library services management.

Information Matters™ supported the local library service with sourcing appropriate material, organising the layout of the library and preparing the library ready for public use. In addition to this, Information Matters™ recruited a team of library specialists to work on the project and within the Counties libraries network.

The community now have superb facilities within walking distance. The Centre for Learning includes a new school for pupils aged 4 – 18 years, a nursery and adult learning facilities.

The Cabinet member for community services at the time, said: “The new library is a really exciting step forward for us in helping children with their studies while meeting the needs of the local community. This library will act as the hub of learning in the community, and its state-of-the–art facilities will really benefit all aspects of learning and training.”

Managing one of the few dual use libraries in the country is a demanding task as there is such a varied user base. The Library manager and her team of library assistants work with the schools to help identify resources for students and teachers. She provides support for class library induction sessions and individual support for students.
